Denmark Work Permit for Denmark Employment

Depending on the candidate’s citizenship, special conditions and procedures apply if the person is willing to obtain an employment and residence permit in Denmark:

  • Nordic Citizens can enter and work in Denmark without any requirement of permit and for unlimited period
  • Countries Nationals of EU and EEA (Lichtenstein, Iceland and Norway) along with Switzerland can enter and work in Denmark without requirement of permits for three months. However, specific transitional rules apply for eight new EU countries
  • Non-EU nationals should obtain a residence and a work permit before arrival in Denmark.

As a Denmark resident,  the candidate must register with Folkeregisteret (National Register). Once after registering, the person can automatically join the National Health Service. A CPR number will be issued and along with a health insurance certificate (sygesikringsbevis) that gives you permit for free medical treatment and some other public services.

EU/ EEA Nationals

EU/ EEA citizens must apply for an EU/EEA residence certificate prior to expiry of the three months residence duration. The residence permit is also allows to work and it serves as a Denmark work permit. The supreme administrative authority of the county will issue the residence permit.

Note that specific transitional conditions are applied to workers from eight new EU countries, namely: Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Poland, Slovenia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Non-EU/ EEA Nationals

For non-EU or non-EEA citizens, work and residence permits are issued only in such situations where major employment or business interests make it desirable. Work and Residence permit should obtain prior to entry in Denmark.

The application documentation should be issued through a Danish mission in the nation of origin. Application forms are available for download from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. The application can be exceptionally submitted in Denmark, and only when the candidate is already lawfully residing in Denmark. Generally, permit is issued in 30 days after receipt of the application and provided that all applicable documentation is issued along with the application.

A division is made among salaried work and self-employment. As a law however, an overseas citizen should have work and residence permit to engage in either activity. This law rule is also applicable to unpaid work.
A foreign citizen hired within professional areas where there is a shortage of particularly qualified persons has simple access to work and residence permits according to the employment card scheme. Professional fields where this condition applied is mentioned in the positive list. Foreign researchers are having easier permit to work and residence permits.

In addition, foreign citizens intending to employment in Denmark as members of the missionaries, clergy etc. may be issued a residence permit in Denmark.

It is vital to note that the duty to obtain a work permit is with the applicant. If a foreign citizen works illegally in Denmark, then he/she can be deported from the nation. Both the employee and the employer can also be punished with imprisonment or fines.
